Hudson Yards/ The Edge

The Hudson Yards was a space created to fill a hole in Manhattan. A place that used to hold abandoned trains and a fish market now hosts living quarters such as condos and apartments, a bustling shopping center, restaurants, entertainment and tourist attractions.

The Vessel is a public art installation designed by Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio. It's meant to be climbed and explored and offers different perspectives of the city.
The Vessel is 150 ft tall has, 154 flights of stairs, and 80 landings. It also has a glass floor and a champagne bar 100 floors up. After opening in 2019 it became a major tourist attraction and selfie spot but was closed in Jan 2021 due to multiple suicide attempts there. It was closed when I went due to reconstruction for safety reasons but was set to reopen in May.

Hudson yards grounds. Here they offer live views of races such as the Kentucky Derby, Nascar and major boxing or MMA matches and different sports are displayed here as well. Many gather to eat food and watch the big screen.

The Edge is a culmination of 15 interlocking sites. It was created in separate locations and assembled together like legos at The Hudson Yards. Facing the East and Southside of The Hudson Yards it provides an immaculate view of New York City. At the heart of the building, resides an enormous pendulum that counteracts the building’s sway. This 5 level building offers a top floor restaurant called The Peak, that offers top level dining and 360 views. With over 100 restaurants and stores there is an immerse shopping and dining experience available. Often times there are rooftop experiences available like live performances, and it was a popular site for Solar Eclipse watching this year. If you’re a photographer like myself, great views for pictures.

There is limited phone use on the journey, but I got a sniper of the wait in line. There are tons of visual aides to accompany and inform you while you wait and journey up. As well digital art to simulate you going up to the top in the elevator. My favorite was the map of lights that was a map of Manhattan.

If you look closely, you can see patrons who have climbed to the side of the building to hang over The Edge. No glide, no drop, just hang over The Edge.
